Stephen Call

Co-Director

In 1982, Stephen opened Pacifica Montessori School with his partner Claire Gerard. His wife Jennifer joined the Pacifica staff a year later as one of the Montessori Primary teachers. Stephen enjoys meeting and getting to know families, sharing the Montessori approach to learning, seeing the children flourish, and the many other aspects of leading Pacifica Montessori. He is dedicated to establishing a nurturing and supportive Montessori environment for the students, families and staff.

Stephen received his B.A. in Psychology from Sonoma State College. Following college, Stephen worked in a psychiatric hospital in Northern California. When he moved to Los Angeles he decided to pursue his interest in helping children reach their fullest potential. After researching different methodologies and being profoundly moved by what he learned about the Montessori Method, Stephen accepted a job at a Montessori school and was soon promoted to Administrator.

Stephen’s twin boys attended Pacifica Montessori from Primary (Preschool) through Elementary and are happy, successful adults. In addition to being a husband and father, Stephen enjoys discussing current events, movies and culture. He also enjoys bike riding, downhill & cross-country skiing, swimming, hiking, camping, travel and repairing broken toys and classroom equipment. Back to Our Staff Page.

Jennifer Call

Co-Director

Jennifer currently co-directs Pacifica Montessori School with her husband Stephen Call. She has been a part of the school since its inception in 1983 and taught one of the Montessori Primary classes for over 25 years. Welcoming children and guiding them during these early years has been her joy and passion.

Although Jennifer is a Los Angeles native, she believes her experience traveling around the world for over 10 years and living in such diverse places as Jachenau, a little farm town in Germany, and San Jose del Pacifico, on the steep slopes of the Oaxacan mountains in Mexico, led her to discover her love for learning and teaching. The experience of being welcomed by people around the world made her a citizen of the world.

After returning to Los Angeles, Jennifer resumed her education, discovered Montessori and took the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) teacher training. What Jennifer loves most about her position as Co-Director is supporting the Montessori teachers in achieving their classroom goals and being able to work with all Pacifica Montessori children on science projects, art, sewing, and baking.

Jennifer’s sons attended Pacifica from Preschool through Elementary. Happily, both live in Los Angeles and often come home for a meal of good Mexican food. Back to Our Staff Page.

Elizabeth Vargo

Primary Teacher

Elizabeth Vargo has been a Montessori Primary teacher at Pacifica Montessori since 2012. She started working at Pacifica Montessori School over twenty years ago after receiving her early childhood education units. At that time, the Montessori Method was new to her, but she soon realized that it was the only way she wanted to teach. She worked with Jennifer Call as her teacher assistant for a number of years, and then in 2011 had the opportunity to take the American Montessori Society (AMS) teacher training and became a Montessori teacher.

Elizabeth is also an artist. She has found that art opens children up and brings out their personality, potential, and confidence. Therefore, Elizabeth uses art as much as possible in the classroom.

Elizabeth finds it rewarding to be a part of a child’s growth. She enjoys watching them take the first steps into being productive citizens of the future. She shares, “Pacifica Montessori is more than just a school. It is a community of children working together.” Back to Our Staff Page.
